Apple reinvents handset - not telecom industry

Tom Evslin describes it perfectly here.

Maybe Apple design and marketing genius will reinvented the handset, but at the most they have built a terrific handset that is still trapped in the walled garden.  Working in the VoIP world for the past 8 years, I've been fixated on this, and was hoping against the odds that they would go for the latter when predicting the content of Apple's presentation last week.

As Tom also stated, maybe this will help motivate a cross-industry partnership that will reinvent telecom with participating carriers providing seamless access into and out of their walled gardens.

Internet pervasiveness has brought us to an inflection point in just about every industry/product segment in which walled gardens keep more people out than they keep in.
